Songs for Scotland presents:
‘An Evening for Alasdair Gray at the Oran Mor’
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 8 November, 2016
On November 29th at 7 PM, Songs for Scotland will stage An Evening for Alasdair Gray in the auditorium at the Oran Mor. The event will be staged to honour Alasdair Gray; to launch the Alasdair Gray Musical Scholarship Trust (a £500 scholarship will be awarded on the night); and to debut a downloadable album of Scottish songs, Native Musicians: Songs for Scotland 2. The album of songs is themed ‘Work as if you live in the early days of a better nation.’ Scottish musical greats from a range of genres (hip hop, trad, americana, Reggae, Afrobeat and others) have contributed songs, including Dick Gaughan, Karen Matheson, Kathleen MacInnes, Dean Owens, Stanley Odd and more — a who’s who of Scottish music (see final page for track list).
The evening will be a celebration of Scottish musical genius to honour a European cultural icon, Glasgow’s own Alasdair Gray. Artists performing will include Emma Pollock (ex The Delgados), Dean Owens, Allan MacDonald, Griogair Labruidh, Brina, Loki, the Matt Seattle Band, and more. Well chosen words in oor mither leid will be spoken by Billy Kay, and writer Alan Bissett will compere a beautiful evening out.
A percentage of ticket sales will go to fund the Alasdair Gray Musical Scholarship Trust. All tickets will also include a free download of Native Musicians: Songs for Scotland 2.
Join us on November 29th, on the eve of St Andrew’s Day, for a brilliant evening featuring the finest in Scottish culture. We’ll have Alasdair’s ‘Sistine Chapel Ceiling for Scotland’s working class’ beautifully illuminated for the occasion; and we hope that Alasdair will be joining us.
